09 July 2006: My world cup dream

When the German team lost early Wednesday morning, it was a defeat felt by millions.
Supporters froze in their seats, unable to digest the fact that such a promising team had been shot down sofuckingclose to the finals.
An entire nation's dream, shattered in a matter of just two minutes.

That was my dream too.

They dodged past 5 opponents with the force of a charging bull. Then had their momentum thrown off by the matador's red cape. You get the picture right...

But today- this match, it'll be their saving grace. While 3 key players on the field will be missing, inculding BALLACK!, there'll still be Podolski Klose Schweinsteiger Lahm Schneider Metzelder Neuville Odonkor Borowski. And I can't leave any of these names out, 'cause all of them have been exceptional.

This is a team that has not given up once. Not when they were at a standstill, not when they were trailing, not even when they were leading.

This is a team in which true unity is showcased. Goals were shared, always with the rest of the team, be it on the pitch or on the bench. Missed shots, while frustrating, were applauded nonetheless. Solid defending and saves, congratulated by pats on the back. In NO other team, have I seen so much encouragement and support among the players and their coaches.

And for Kahn's fans - ME! - we will get the chance to watch one of the greatest goalkeepers of his time, in his last appearance in the Fifa World Cup.

The Germans might not have won this World Cup, but in a way, it feels like they have.
